A good software company name is short, easy to pronounce, read the way it is written, available as a domain and as a trademark, and it tells people either what the company does or how it wants to feel. In this guide we cover the criteria of a strong software company name, 150 name ideas grouped by category, and the domain, trade name and trademark checks you should run before you start using the name, including the Turkish registries if you are setting up a company in Turkey.
7 criteria of a good software company name
The name is the first brand element a customer meets, before the logo and the website. Check these seven criteria when choosing:
| Criterion | Why it matters | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| Short | Easy to remember, fits the logo and the domain | 2–3 syllables, ideally under 10 letters |
| Pronounceable | Understood on the phone or in a meeting without repeating | Say it to someone and ask them to write it down |
| Spelled as it sounds | No typos in search or in the domain | No "ph/f" or "x/ks" ambiguity |
| Original | Not confused with competitors, can be registered as a trademark | No similar name in your sector |
| Scalable | Does not become too narrow as you add services | A broader name instead of "WebsiteGuy" |
| Internationally safe | No awkward meaning for customers abroad | Check its meaning in Turkish and Russian too |
| Domain available | .com and, if you work in Turkey, .com.tr can be registered | Search at a domain registrar |
Types of names: which approach suits you?
Software company names usually rely on one of five approaches:
- Descriptive names: Say directly what you do (e.g. "CodeWorkshop"). Clear, but trademark registration and distinctiveness can be difficult.
- Compound names: A combination of two words (e.g. "CloudForge"). Carries meaning and stays original.
- Invented names: Words with no meaning that sound good (e.g. "Zentra"). The easiest for trademarks and domains, but it takes more effort to explain the brand.
- Metaphor names: Names that evoke a concept (e.g. "Compass Software"). Good for storytelling.
- Acronyms: Initials of the founders or of a long legal name. Hard to remember until the brand is known.

How to use AI to find a name
Tools like ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini give you a fast start on name ideas, but you need to give the right prompt. To get useful results:
- Give context: Instead of "suggest a software company name", say "suggest 30 names of 2–3 syllables, pronounced the same in English and Turkish, for a software company building e-commerce and mobile apps for SMEs in Turkey that wants to signal trust and speed".
- Set constraints: Specify letter count, language, associations and words to avoid.
- Shortlist and go deeper: Pick the 5 names you like and ask for "20 variations similar to these but shorter".
- Do the checks yourself: AI does not know the domain or trademark status; run every check yourself.
5 checks before you use the name
Finding the name is half the job. Complete these checks before ordering a logo and a website:
1. Domain check
Since 2022, .com.tr domains can be registered through TRABİS (Turkey's .tr domain registry) without submitting documents. If possible, register both .com.tr and .com, and check that the social media handles are available too.
2. Trade name check
The trade name (ticaret unvanı, the official company name used at incorporation in Turkey) includes the company type (Ltd. Şti. for a limited company, A.Ş. for a joint-stock company), and the same trade name cannot belong to another company. You can search trade names through MERSİS, Turkey's central company registry.
3. Trademark check
In TÜRKPATENT's (the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office) trademark search tool, check whether the name and similar names are registered, especially in the classes covering software and IT services (usually classes 9, 35, 38 and 42). A trademark registration is protected for 10 years and can be renewed. A name similar to a registered trademark may force you to rebrand later.
4. Search engine check
Search the name on Google. If a strong brand already uses it, it will be harder to stand out in search results.
5. Ear and meaning test
Say the name to 5–10 people and ask them to write it down. If it gets misspelled, or it has a negative meaning in another language, reconsider.
After the name: brand and digital presence
Once the name is settled, the next steps are the logo and corporate identity, the domain and a business email, and then a website that clearly explains what the company does. For a newly founded software company, the website is the fastest way to build references and trust. For this process, take a look at our corporate website and software company pages.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should a software company name be in English or in the local language?
It depends on your target market. If you will mainly serve SMEs in Turkey, a Turkish name or one that reads naturally in both languages is an advantage. If you target customers abroad, choose a name that is easy to pronounce in English and contains no Turkish characters (ç, ğ, ı, ö, ş, ü).
Does the company name have to be the same as the brand name?
No. The trade name is used in official records; the brand name is what customers see. For example, the trade name can be "Yılmaz Bilişim Ltd. Şti." while the brand is "Kodrix". It is recommended to register the brand separately with TÜRKPATENT.
Should the word "software" appear in the name?
It is not required. Adding "Software", "IT" or "Tech" clarifies what you do but makes the name longer. A common solution is to pick a short, original brand name and use "Software" (Yazılım) in the trade name.
Can I use a name if another company already has it?
The same trade name cannot be used. Using the same or a similar name as a brand is a legal risk if it is registered in the same class. If the similarity is in a different sector and unregistered, the risk is lower, but consulting a trademark attorney is the safest option.
Does it make sense to use AI to find a name?
For generating ideas, yes. With context and constraints you can get dozens of suggestions; but you should always run the domain, trade name and trademark checks yourself.
